Things I've Learned About While Writing (Erin)

One of the most fun things about being an author is learning about all sorts of random, interesting topics you would never have taken the time to research otherwise.

Here is a list of topics, in no particular order, that I have learned about since I started this crazy fun writing journey.

  • The Pink Panthers jewelry smuggling ring
  • How to set a trip wire flare
  • Vietnamese desserts
  • Driving distance from Bucharest to Alba Iulia
  • The difference between types of granite and igneous rock
  • National Guard cave rescue procedures
  • Symptoms of sepsis and stroke
  • The definition and medical incidence of lithopedion
  • Elevation of the Carpathian Mountains
  • Origin of Sylvan Lake
I’m sure there are tons more, but these are the ones that came to mind. For details, you'll have to read my books. (If they ever get published. . . I am set to begin revising Book 1 on June 1st. After that, I'll be sending it out to agents, publishers, and/or editors. I'll keep you posted!)

What topic have you learned more about, since becoming a writer?
If you aren’t a writer (yet!), what is something you’ve always wanted to learn more about?
Post a comment and let me know!

  1. Hmmm, during NaNoWriMo I had to look some interesting things up. Here's the list: the gestation period of a sheep, what causes stillbirth, and soporific plants. There might have been a couple others, too. I always wonder what non-authors would think if they saw my search history. Oh, and I had to interrogate my mom about how to describe pregnancy and labor pains, since I haven't experienced those things.

I really love this post. I can't wait to see what random things other people have learned.

    1. Thanks, Brenna! Your book sounds very interesting as well! : ) I keep worrying I will get investigated by the NSA, as some of my searches are a bit random! But, in the interest of keeping suspense up, I won't say what they involve! : )

  3. Neat idea, Erin! I have learned a ton about-
    Geography,
European and Oriental weapons (particularly maces, spears, and katanas),
Armor (plate vs mail vs leather vs none)
    Psychology,
    Architecture,
Elves of various types in mythology and pop culture,
TONS of other Ssci-if races from various sources,
    Horses,
    And military-rank/chain-of-command.
Not to mention story theory, structure, hooks, character development, plot development, setting development, and all of the other writing-related info you need to write a successful book.
That's a lot! And it was fascinating. It is amazing what you learn as a writer.

Just out of curiosity: what genre is your WIP?

    2. Sounds neat! I have spent several summers in the Black Hills, and my mom grew up there. For those of you who have seen National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the lake "behind" Mt. Rushmore is Sylvan Lake... except that in reality, it is five miles away. It is very funny to see how they manipulated the landscape to fit the story, when in reality, it is quite different. :)

    3. We spend summers in the Black Hills, too, and National Treasure is one of our favorite movies! But, you are right, the landscape isn't really right. . .
